Autumn in Hebden Bridge: Turn an Old Jumper into a Beautiful Interior Pumpkin
If you’re looking for something a little different to do in Hebden Bridge this autumn, I’m bringing fashion, interiors and upcycling together for a cosy creative evening at The Making Mill.
On Saturday 17 October, I’ll be hosting Pumpkins & Prosecco A Luxury Autumn Upcycling Evening, a two-hour creative workshop where you’ll learn how to transform an old jumper into an elegant handmade fabric pumpkin for your home.
No previous sewing experience is needed.
You simply bring a jumper you’re ready to give a new life to, and I’ll guide you through the rest.
A different kind of autumn workshop
I wanted this workshop to feel a little different from a traditional craft class.
My background is in fashion design and garment construction, so the idea behind Pumpkins & Prosecco is to take something that may otherwise sit unworn at the back of your wardrobe and use the principles of textiles, shape and upcycling to turn it into a beautiful interior object.
The result is a soft, sculptural fabric pumpkin that can become part of your autumn décor year after year.
It is also completely personal to you.
An old wool jumper, a piece of knitwear with a beautiful texture, something in an autumn shade or even a much-loved jumper that is no longer wearable can all become the starting point for your pumpkin.
Rather than buying another mass-produced seasonal decoration, you create something with its own history.
What happens during the workshop?
During the two-hour session, I’ll take you through the process step by step.
You’ll learn how to prepare your jumper, create the shape of the pumpkin, construct and finish it and use the details to give it the polished, high-end look we’re aiming for.
The workshop is suitable for complete beginners, so you do not need sewing or fashion experience to take part.
By the end of the evening, you’ll leave with your own finished interior pumpkin ready to style at home.
All additional materials required for the project will be provided.
All you need to bring is:
-
one old jumper you would like to transform
-
yourself
-
and, if you fancy it, a bottle of Prosecco
Pumpkins, Prosecco and a relaxed Saturday evening
The making is only one part of the evening.
I wanted to create a workshop that also gives women an excuse to step away from the usual Saturday routine, meet other people and spend a couple of hours doing something creative.
Come on your own or bring a friend.
Bring your favourite drink, settle in for the evening and spend two hours making something beautiful in the heart of Hebden Bridge.
It is intended to feel less like a formal sewing lesson and more like a creative autumn evening with a fashion designer.

Why upcycle an old jumper?
Upcycling is about looking at an existing material differently.
Clothing does not necessarily have to reach the end of its life simply because we no longer wear it.
A jumper may no longer fit, may have a damaged section, or may simply have been forgotten in a wardrobe but the fabric itself can still be beautiful.
For me, that is one of the most interesting parts of working with textiles: finding another purpose for a material and transforming it through design.
This workshop is an introduction to that way of thinking.
You are not only learning how to make a fabric pumpkin. You are seeing how an existing garment can become something completely different.
Looking for things to do in Hebden Bridge this October?
Hebden Bridge has a wonderful creative community, and autumn is the perfect season to spend an afternoon or evening making something by hand.
If you enjoy fashion, textiles, sewing, interiors, sustainable design, upcycling or seasonal home décor, Pumpkins & Prosecco is designed for you.
You don’t need to be “creative”.
You don’t need to own a sewing machine.
And you certainly don’t need to know how to sew already.
I’ll show you what to do.
Come with a friend and save £10
A single workshop place is £45, but if you would like to make it a Saturday evening out with a friend, you can currently book two places for £80 instead of £90.
That works out at £40 each.
Bring a friend, a sister, your mum or come by yourself and meet somebody new.
